arbor day logoCelebrating Florida Trees on National Arbor Day is an annual event at Edison Ford, home to hundreds of varieties of trees and plants and numbers of champion-sized trees.

Thomas and Mina Edison are joined in tree planting by Edison Ford garden patron, Berne Davis, and a member of the Fort Myers-Lee County Garden Council.

National Arbor Day has been around since 1872 as a national celebration, and Thomas Edison began his work in Fort Myers adding trees to his gardens as early as 1885. Some of his earliest favorites include the Mangos, which he planted along the McGregor fence line and the stately Royal Palms which are a feature throughout his property and also for 10 miles along historic McGregor Boulevard today.

This year on National Arbor Day, Edison Ford will celebrate with a memorial to Gary Bishop. Gary had volunteered for seven years, with over 9,000 hours accrued in the Edison Ford Museum. Gary would assist visitors across McGregor Boulevard safely for tours, and greet guests at The Marina at Edison Ford. A bench and two trees will be planted at the Coconut Grove in honor of Gary and light refreshments will be served afterwards.

Thanks to all the staff and volunteers at Edison Ford for their generous donations toward our tree planting/bench dedication to Gary Bishop. All are welcome.
