Edison Garden Market – November 22 – 23, 2014

Mark your calendars for the Edison Garden Market. The event  is FREE to the public. Gardeners will be delighted at this one-stop shopping venue for unique garden items, including flowering trees, tropical plants and fruits, bougainvillea, orchids, roses, bromeliads, palms, cactus, herbs, bonsai, bamboo, ginger, butterfly plants, garden art, home and gardening supplies are all available. Edison Ford horticultural staff will be available to answer questions in the Garden Shoppe. Historic “heritage plants” that have been propagated in the Edison Nursery will be available for purchase.

The Garden Market attracts plant vendors from throughout Florida and attracts gardeners and visitors looking for unique and historical garden items. Edison Garden Market vendor space is available for plant growers, fruit producers, garden art and garden supply vendors by calling Debbie Hughes or Sandra Drake at 239-334-7419.

Florida Butterfly Conference at Edison Ford

Edison Ford planted our Butterfly Garden several years ago with the help of the Edison Garden Club, Fort Myers-Lee County Garden Council and the UF Master Gardeners. Since then the garden has flourished and features a lovely reflecting pool with sculptured wading birds by Don Wilkins. The Garden Shoppe also offers a variety of butterfly attracting plants year-round for purchase. Edison Ford horticulture staff is always available for questions.

Tyler spicebush      This is a chance to participate in wonderful programs, enjoy a boxed lunch with friends and meet people from all over Florida. The guest lecturers include noted Botanist, Roger Hammer, who will speak on butterfly gardens; Karen Finch, Sarasota butterfly authority; Sandra Baker-Hinton on butterfly release; and noted artist and writer, Elizabeth Smith will teach illustrated garden journaling. Debbie Hughes, Edison Ford Senior Horticulturalist will speak on pests and pesticides.


School Break – Robotics and Engineering

      Learn to build and program robots, work with LEGO EV3 Mindstorms and NXT programming software. No experience required, just a passion for engineering and robotics.

 talking doll     A wonderful replica of the original Edison Talking Doll in the Museum Gallery is now for sale in the Museum Stores. She was Edison’s 643 patent and manufactured in 1890. She is a wonderful gift for all ages (especially doll collectors) at $29.95. Edison Ford Members receive a 10% discount.

November 12 & 13, 2014 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Painting in the Gardens

     Learn painting technique and create original work in the Edison Moonlight Garden and the New West Porch at the Museum. Good for all skill levels, supply list will be provided.

March 25 & 26, 2015, 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Collage

     Create history through personal photographs and other objects combined with painting and the instruction of Leoma Lovegrove. Work in areas of Edison Ford and at The Marina at Edison Ford. Lunch on your own at Pinchers with Leoma.


Scarf Art with artist Marie Dyer

November 15, 2014, January 24, 2015, March 14, 2015 – 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

      Join artist Marie Dyer and create your own hand painted silk scarf. Marie will teach a variety of techniques to inspire painters of all levels to create their own one-of-a-kind scarf. All materials will be provided to produce a finished piece. “Scarf Art” classes will be located on the West Museum Porch at Edison Ford. Bring a lunch or enjoy lunch at the Banyan Refreshment area or Pinchers at The Marina at Edison Ford. Cost: Edison Ford Members $75; non-members $80 (includes all materials and scarf).

Edison Ford Annual Clothesline Quilt Show

Quilt show 2014 october      The Edison & Ford Winter Estates and the Southwest Florida Quilter’s Guild will be “airing their quilts” on clotheslines in front of Seminole Lodge, the winter estate of Thomas and Mina Edison.

The tradition of “airing” quilts dates back to Colonial America when women would take quilts out of summer storage and “air” them in autumn for use in winter. In addition to the contemporary quilts available for show and sale, a variety of antique quilts will be on display.

Edison Ford Members FREE; non-members $5.


Thomas Edison Black Maria Film Festival

      The Thomas Edison Black Maria Film Festival returns for the eighth season to the Edison & Ford Winter Estates, October 24 outdoors on the river side lawn of the Ford Estate and Florida SouthWestern State College, Thomas Edison (Lee) Campus, Richard H. Rush Library and Auditorium, October 25.

The Black Maria Film Festival is an international, award winning festival that has toured the nation for 33 years and is hosted by museums and colleges throughout the nation showcasing independent and experimental film and video. The films include a variety of contemporary works drawn from the annual juried selection of award winning films and videos. The Black Maria is recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as an Academy Awards qualifying festival for short films. Guest Speaker, Clayton Hemmert, Board President & CEO of Crew Cuts, New York City.

Tickets are on sale now at Edison Ford in the museum store. Volunteer Meeting and Program

  • October 22, 11:00 – Seafood 101 at Pinchers Crab Shack

      The monthly volunteer meeting has been moved a little later in the day to 11:00 a.m. It will include a full class on seafood, how to eat it, love it and understand it, taught by Pinchers owner, Grant Phelan. Pinchers fresh seafood includes a crab and fish operation on Pine Island for blue crab, stone crab, shrimp, fish and other local seafood. The program will be blue crabpresented at Pinchers next door through the Edison Coconut Grove. RSVP to Holly or Bobby at 239-334-7419  Remember – volunteers receive FREE admission aboard the M/V Edison Explorer departing daily at The Marina at Edison Ford. Annual Member Celebration – Jazz Age Garden Party

jazz cartoon    Join us on the new Museum West Porch, in the Porch Gardens and in the Museum for our Annual Member Celebration. Members and guests are encouraged to come in 1920s or 1930s attire. (Costume rental available from Vamped Up Vintage at 239-936-4888 … or “business garden casual”).

The event will include Jazz Age music by Danny Morgan, Jazz Colours Ensemble; for listening and dancing; dance performances and Charleston lessons with Alyce Bochette of Dance Bochette; update on what’s happening at Edison Ford with President & CEO Chris Pendleton; photo booth and much more.

Complimentary Bathtub Punch, water and Gatsby themed cheese and fruit sampler will be available. Gin Rickey, Champagne Cocktail, beer and wine will be available for purchase. Boxed dinners will be available for $15 and include hot fried chicken or veggie wrap. Dinners must be ordered in advance.
