One of our favorite projects at Edison Ford is the continuing program to replenish our historic trees. We call it the Sister Tree Project and donations to this are often made in memory of a loved one, commemorating a wedding or important event, or “just because” donors want to keep the landscapresident updatepe vibrant.

There is always a refreshment of the landscape going on here – not just on Arbor Day. An important part of the Edison Ford family legacy was their love of trees and plants. Many of these were also of great interest to them.

Recently we organized a project to add historic trees to the garden area near the new West Porch of the Museum. The trees will provide shade and have been selected from the inventory of trees that have been part of the gardens for the past 100 years.

I am delighted to tell you that 25 families recently contributed to this area and as a result we have begun installing the trees and will continue over the next few months. Please join us in thanking the following donors: Edward & Olive Abbott, Phyllis Bickerstaff, Phyllis Catron, Robert & Kathy Dean, Doris Delaney, Pauline Doane, Deirdre Duggan, Charles & Sass Edwards, Helen Haver, Jim Hopton, Tom & Toni Hottovy, Donna Johnson, Jamie & Jan Magirl, Cynthia Martin, Jerry & Helen McMillian, Steve Niehaus, Timothy & Pat Nolan, James & Nancy Owens, Chris Pendleton, James & Ginny Plummer, Duane & Holly Shaffer, Eldon & Mary Ann Shuey, Carlos & Susan Sierra, The GE Foundation, David & Karen Toothman, and Babu Mathew.

Some of the trees that we have planted in this location and in other locations on the property include: Banyan (near the back gate), Oak, Palm, Golden Kenyan Shower, Pink Shower, Vearawood, Yellow Geiger, Jerusalem Thorn, Pink Powder Puff, Yellow Oleander, Milky Way Tree, and Cecropia.

If you would like to donate a sister tree, tax deductible donations can be made year-round. The application is available at  www.edisonfordwinterestates.org or by calling Edison Ford at 239-334-7419.
