Edison Ford Director’s Tours 2014

     Edison Ford Director’s Tours are underway. We have selected Florida destinations with exciting museums, gardens, historic sites and shopping. Contact Cori Cramsey at 239-334-7419.

    • February 22, Saturday – Delray Beach (waiting list)

     The tour includes the beautiful Morikami Museum & Japanese Gardens and Old School Square museum and galleries, and shopping on historic Atlantic Avenue. Private lunch included.

  • March 20, Thursday – Sarasota directors tours feb 2014

     The tour includes the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, well known for its collection of orchids, glass houses and gardens. The day will finish up at the Ringling Estate with a tour arranged by longtime Keeper of Ca’d Zan and Ringling Curator, Ron McCarty. It includes the Ringling Museum & Estate, Art Museum and Circus Museum as well as a private tour after dark of the new James Terrell light sculpture installation. Private lunch included.

 • April 5, Saturday – Tampa

     Henry Plant put Tampa on the map with his railroads and hotel a 100 years ago. This tour includes the Henry B. Plant Museum and the Annual Appraiser’s Fair and private tour of the historic hotel.  Luncheon at Tampa Bay Yacht Club included.

 

2014 Inventors Summer Camp – Two more weeks added

     Registration is underway for the 10th year of the summer program, Edison Ford Inventor’s Summer Camp.

Registration can be completed in person by stopping by Edison Ford, and completing the printed application brochure, by calling the Edison Ford Education Department at 239-334-7419 or by downloading the forms here.

      We call this an “immersion” day camp as it is based in the Edison Caretaker’s House and includes directed activities in the gardens of the Edison and Ford Estates, the Edison Ford Museum and the Edison Botanic Laboratory. Student inventors work in science, history and the arts and get to know the Edison & Ford Winter Estates in a very personal way. We are building the next generation of inventors and leaders. Early registration is suggested (some camps are already full) and competitive scholarships are available.

      Become an author and illustrator during Week 10 and Week 11 at Edison Ford and create a book to share. Week 10 focuses on stories about Thomas Edison’s fascinating inventions and Week 11 explores Henry Ford’s exciting life. Students will work in teams to write and illustrate books about the great inventors. Students will have the opportunity to work with computers and learn from local artists and authors.

Scarf Art Workshop with artist Marie Dyer

● March 21, 22, & 23, 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. – Edison Ford Shoppe at Bell Tower Shops

     Join Southwest Florida artist, Marie Dyer, and create your own hand painted silk scarf. Marie will teach a variety of techniques to inspire painters of all levels to create their own “one-of-a-kind” scarf.  All materials will be provided to produce a finished piece.

      Known for her vivid floral landscape paintings, Marie has been a featured artist at Edison Ford and has taught “Scarf Art” workshops throughout the New England area. Participants may bring their own lunch or enjoy eating at the restaurants at Bell Tower Shops. To register call 239-334-7419.

           Cost: Edison Ford Members $85; non-members $90 (includes materials and one silk scarf).

 

Edison Ford Monthly Volunteer Meeting and Program and Marina at Edison Ford Preview

Park at Edison Ford, Meet at Edison Ford Pavilion/Info booth and we will walk through the newly restored Coconut Grove. It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes.

     Join Edison Ford staff for a behind the scenes tour of the new Marina at Edison Ford which includes Pinchers Restaurant on the second floor, and the River Ballroom on the first floor.

      A tasting of menu items will be provided by Pinchers and we learn about volunteer opportunities at this new location and other opportunities to get involved.

      Meetings are open to current Edison Ford volunteers, potential volunteers and the public. For additional information contact the Edison Ford Volunteer Department at 239-334-7419 and ask for Holly or Bobby, Volunteer Coordinators.

 

River Cruise & Tour from Captiva Return for Season

Marina at Edison Ford Jan 14     Beginning February 26, 2014, the Edison & Ford Winter Estates and Captiva Cruises will be offering Edison Ford River Cruise & Tours from Captiva Island beginning February 26, 2014. The River Cruise & Tours will be offered every Wednesday during season. The river tour shows the importance of the Caloosahatchee ecologically and culturally, includes a view of the Edison & Ford Winter Estates from the water and guided tour of the Edison and Ford historic homes, gardens, lab and museum. Participants will arrive at the NEW Marina at Edison Ford and will have time to enjoy lunch on their own at Pinchers at the Marina. Ticket cost: $65 Adults, $60 children (ages 12 and under) plus tax and includes and historian led tour of the river and Edison Ford. Seating is limited and reservations are suggested by calling 239-472-5300. River Cruise & Tour program is a project of the Edison & Ford Winter Estates, Captiva Cruises and Pinchers at the Marina at Edison Ford.

captiva cruises     Boat Cruise of the Caloosahatchee and self-guided tours of the Edison & Ford Winter Estates begins February 26, 2014 at noon and 1 p.m., departing at the Marina at Edison Ford. Self-guided tour includes audio tour of the Edison and Ford historic homes and gardens, admission to the Edison Lab and Inventions Museum and cruise of the Caloosahatchee River with Captiva Cruises. Ticket cost: $45 adults, $35 children (ages 12 and under). Tickets may be purchased at the Edison Ford ticket office or at the Marina at Edison Ford. Participants will depart from at the NEW Marina at Edison Ford and will have time to enjoy lunch on their own at Pinchers Crab Shack. River Cruise & Tour program is a project of the Edison & Ford Winter Estates, Captiva Cruises and Pinchers at the Marina at Edison Ford.

Thomas Edison’s 167th Birthday Celebration edison birthday feb 2014

Edison turns 167 this year and his inventions continue to improve our world. Join Thomas and Mina Edison for the celebration as they enjoy a performance by the dance troupe of neighboring Edison Park Creative & Expressive Arts School, birthday cake and turn a spade to begin construction of the new West Porch onto the Museum.

1929 Ford Tri Motor Airplane at Page Field

A 1929 Ford Tri Motor will be on display at Fort Myers Page Field Airport February 6 – 9 and available for ticketed flights. Page Field has been recently transformed with a beautiful new terminal where Edison Ford displays its 1937 Ford Coupe. For information call 1-877-952-5395, or visit the AirVenture Museum online.

Ford tri-motor feb 2014      Henry Ford expanded into airplane manufacture from 1926 – 1933. The Ford Tri Motor was flown by 100 air companies, used by Charles Lindbergh in his many transatlantic flights and Admiral Richard Byrd during his flight to the South Pole.

This is an opportunity to see a historic and beautiful airplane (nicknamed “the tin goose”). Brought to the region by The Experimental Aircraft Associations’ AirVenture Museum and Southwest Florida International Airport, Page Field.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Strolling Flower Show at Bell Tower Shops

     The Edison Ford Garden Group will once again participate in the annual Periwinkle Garden Club Strolling Flower Show at Bell Tower Shops. This year, Edison Ford will install their display in the Edison Ford Shoppe located at the central courtyard fountain. Floral displays by many garden clubs and societies from the Fort Myers-Lee County Garden Council will be on exhibit in shops throughout Bell Tower.
