Edison Ford Director’s Tours 2013 – 2014

directors tours nov 2013     With only a month to go until the first Director’s Tour, spaces are filling up for this unique travel series. We have selected Florida destinations with exciting museums, gardens, historic sites and shopping.

 • December 7, Saturday – Palm Beach (waitlist only)

     Only five spaces are left for this tour, which includes spots on the island of Palm Beach including the Society of the Four Arts with its beautiful Addison Mizner architecture, historic gardens and dazzling new sculpture garden, Henry Flagler’s Whitehall Estate, plus shopping and strolling on historic posh Worth Avenue. Support from the Palm Beach Preservation Society.  Private garden lunch included.

  • January 11, Saturday – Miami, Coral Gables

     Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone worked closely with David Fairchild, who created the first international seed bank in Miami. Much of their collaboration was focused on finding a source of organic rubber which could be grown in the US. Today Fairchild’s research gardens are known as Fairchild Botanic Garden and encompass 80 acres of unusual tropical plantings. We will also tour The Kampong, the private estate of David Fairchild which today houses the US Botanic Gardens. Private lunch included.

 • February 22, Saturday – Delray Beach

     The tour includes beautiful Morikami Museum & Japanese Gardens and historic restoration of Old School Square museum and galleries, and shopping on historic Atlantic Avenue. Private lunch included.

  • March 20, Thursday – Sarasota

     The tour includes the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, well known for its collection of orchids, glass houses and gardens. The day will finish up at the Ringling Estate with a tour arranged by longtime Keeper of Ca’d Zan and Ringling Curator, Ron McCarty. It includes the Ringling Museum & Estate, Art Museum and Circus Museum as well as a private tour after dark of the new James Terrell light sculpture installation. Private lunch included.

 • April 5, Saturday – Tampa

     Henry Plant put Tampa on the map with his railroads and hotel a 100 years ago. This tour includes the Henry B. Plant Museum and the Annual Appraiser’s Fair and private tour of the historic hotel.  Luncheon at Tampa Bay Yacht Club included.
