Daytime December at a Glance

• Daily Tours – Every day of the week visitors have the option of an Historian-Led Tour, Audio Tour in English, German, Spanish or French, or a Lab and Museum Tour.

 • Garden Tour – Wednesdays – 10:30 a.m.

      Join Edison Ford garden staff to experience the 20 acres of gardens of the Edison and Ford families. See what’s blooming and enjoy many varieties of bamboo and rubber plants used in Edison’s original research, as well as fruit trees, palms, roses, orchids, Moonlight Garden and more. Admission includes audio tour of homes, museum and lab admission. Cost: Edison Ford Members FREE; non-members $30.

 • German Language Tour – Wednesdays – 10:30 a.m.

      Historian led tour of homes, gardens, lab and museum in German. Cost: Adults $25; Children (ages 6 – 12) $15.

 • Behind the Scenes Tour – Thursdays – 10:30 a.m.

      A Behind-the-Scenes tour takes you inside and up close in the Edison and Ford homes led by curatorial staff, and includes the homes, gardens, lab and museum. Cost: Edison Ford Members FREE; non-members $40. Space is limited so reservations are suggested by calling 239-334-7419.

 • Young Inventor’s Tour – Saturdays – 11:00 a.m.

     Children of all ages will have fun while participating in hands-on science activities based on the inventions of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. Activities include an assembly line, phonograph demonstrations and much more.  Cost: Edison Ford Members FREE; non-members: Adults $12, Children (ages 6 – 12) $5.

 • Inside the Lab Hands-on Science – Sundays – 2:00 p.m.

     A behind the scenes program inside the lab and museum. Includes demonstrations with inventions and hands-on activities featuring Edison and Ford inventions. Cost: Edison Ford Members: $10 donation per family; non-members: Adults $30, Children (ages 6 – 12) $5. Audio tour included. (One adult required for every two children. Participants will receive a 10% discount on all “invention items,” including books, science kits and toys).

 • Santa Claus Visits in the Ford Santa Workshop – December 7, 11, 23 – 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.  Children will enjoy cartooning with Santa Claus (Doug MacGregor).

Edison Ford Holiday Nights 2013 open through January 4

     For 38 years the Annual Edison Ford Holiday Nights event at the Edison & Ford Winter Estates has been a “must see” holiday tradition in Southwest Florida. During the holidays the homes and gardens of Thomas and Mina Edison and Henry and Clara Ford are seasonally decorated and visitors have the option of a self-guided tour or a guided tour with an Edison Ford site historian (6:00 and 7:00 p.m.). For the month long event, the site remains open until 9:00 p.m. with beautifully decorated historic buildings and gardens and millions of colorful lights.

      Edison Ford Holiday Nights includes nightly entertainment by school and community groups, book signings and appearances by artists, and the “Children’s Tree Trail” a forest of trees decorated by Lee County students. The Museum and Lab are also open during the event.

Engineering Competition at Edison Ford

STEM competition     About 400 people turned out for the annual engineering competition at Edison Ford on Saturday, September 28, 2013. Student teams created catapults and learned about vectors and force.

      Activities have been sponsored by GE, DEX, Quest Specialty Chemicals, Quinn Family, Advanced Polymers and the Keehan Family.

 

Edison Ford Director’s Tours 2013 – 2014

directors tours nov 2013     With only a month to go until the first Director’s Tour, spaces are filling up for this unique travel series. We have selected Florida destinations with exciting museums, gardens, historic sites and shopping.

 • December 7, Saturday – Palm Beach (waitlist only)

     Only five spaces are left for this tour, which includes spots on the island of Palm Beach including the Society of the Four Arts with its beautiful Addison Mizner architecture, historic gardens and dazzling new sculpture garden, Henry Flagler’s Whitehall Estate, plus shopping and strolling on historic posh Worth Avenue. Support from the Palm Beach Preservation Society.  Private garden lunch included.

  • January 11, Saturday – Miami, Coral Gables

     Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone worked closely with David Fairchild, who created the first international seed bank in Miami. Much of their collaboration was focused on finding a source of organic rubber which could be grown in the US. Today Fairchild’s research gardens are known as Fairchild Botanic Garden and encompass 80 acres of unusual tropical plantings. We will also tour The Kampong, the private estate of David Fairchild which today houses the US Botanic Gardens. Private lunch included.

 • February 22, Saturday – Delray Beach

     The tour includes beautiful Morikami Museum & Japanese Gardens and historic restoration of Old School Square museum and galleries, and shopping on historic Atlantic Avenue. Private lunch included.

  • March 20, Thursday – Sarasota

     The tour includes the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, well known for its collection of orchids, glass houses and gardens. The day will finish up at the Ringling Estate with a tour arranged by longtime Keeper of Ca’d Zan and Ringling Curator, Ron McCarty. It includes the Ringling Museum & Estate, Art Museum and Circus Museum as well as a private tour after dark of the new James Terrell light sculpture installation. Private lunch included.

 • April 5, Saturday – Tampa

     Henry Plant put Tampa on the map with his railroads and hotel a 100 years ago. This tour includes the Henry B. Plant Museum and the Annual Appraiser’s Fair and private tour of the historic hotel.  Luncheon at Tampa Bay Yacht Club included.

American Sand Sculpting Championships

Sand Shuffle Showcases at Edison Ford

● November 1 – December 1

      Visitors can watch as a giant sand sculpture is created at Edison Ford by one of the artists from the American Sand Sculpting Championships.

 sand sculpture nov 2013     About one ton of sand was delivered to Edison Ford in early November and the theme this year is the Edison Holiday House.  The sculpture will remain at Edison Ford until December 1.  The competition will be held Nov 22 – Dec 1 on Fort Myers Beach.  For information about the event, tickets and activities, visit the American Sand Sculpting Championship online.

 

Scarf Art Workshop with artist Marie Dyer

● November 23, 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. – Edison Ford Shoppe at Bell Tower Shops

      Join Southwest Florida artist, Marie Dyer and create your own hand-painted silk scarf (either six feet long or 35 inch square). Marie will teach a variety of techniques to inspire painters of all levels to create their own “one-of-a-kind” scarf. The scarves can be worn as art pieces or used as art for the home. All materials will be provided to produce a finished piece, just in time for holiday giving. Several of Marie’s scarves will be on display in the window of the Edison Ford Shoppe at Bell Tower and are available for purchase. “Scarf Art” will be held outside the Edison Ford Shoppe at Bell Tower on three separate dates.

marie dyer nov 2013      Known for her vivid floral and landscape paintings, Marie has been a featured artist at Edison Ford. Marie has taught “Scarf Art” workshops at locations throughout the New England area. Her vibrant colors and love of nature are reflected in her distinctive work.

      Cost: Edison Ford Members $85; non-members $90 (includes materials and one silk scarf). Space is limited, registration is required by calling 239-334-7419. Participants may bring their own lunch or enjoy eating at the restaurants at Bell Tower Shops.
