Edison Ford Volunteer Program Schedule

     The Volunteer Program at Edison Ford includes more than 250 dedicated volunteers who contribute their talents and labor to every department and activity. Volunteers are involved in office support, exhibits, curatorial, special events, horticulture, retail and stores, and serve as docents and living history characters.

volunteer garden Babu      The Edison Ford volunteer group is also active socially and professionally with monthly volunteer lectures and meetings generally the second Tuesday of the month, which provides an opportunity to hear guest speakers and learn more about the history, science and arts that are reflected in the site’s legacy.

         Speakers: Robin Getz, Literacy Buddies; Councilman Mike Flanders, City of Fort Myers will talk about the architecture of this historic church and land given by Mina Edison.


• November 12, 9:30 a.m. – Southwest Florida Water Management Building

         Speaker: Author Linda Taylor, Great Women Exploring Nature


•  December 10, 9:30 a.m. – Southwest Florida Water Management Building

          Speakers: Edison Ford Curatorial Staff will talk about the history of Holiday Nights


Meetings and lectures are open to current Edison Ford volunteers, potential volunteers and the public.

Edison Ford Holiday Nights Children’s Tree Trail

•  November 29 – January 4

      A holiday tradition for thirteen years, the Edison Ford Children’s Tree Trail is a favorite among the visitors during the holiday season and is atree trail kids collaborative project with the Edison & Ford Winter Estates and Lee County Schools represented by Art Teacher, Karen Flanders.  Students create a forest of lighted trees with handmade ornaments using a variety of techniques and materials that capture the talents of many young emerging artists. The theme changes from year to year but is always based on Edison and Ford inventions. This year the theme is movies. The “Trail” is located in the Edison Truck Garden and is FREE to the public. Girl and Boy Scouts Badge Programs

     The Edison & Ford Winter Estates has designed unique programming for Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Webelos during the month of December. Scouts earn badges while learning science, technology and history with hands-on, engaging experiments, demonstrations, projects and activities.       Now in its 10th year, the annual Director’s Tours for 2013 – 2014 have been set, and it is a very exciting list of destinations!

      As usual, we work with our colleagues to arrange very unique and in most cases, behind-the-scenes opportunities at these very unusual Florida treasures.  The dates have been set for some of the venues, below is a list for your calendars:

 • December – Palm Beach

     Henry Flagler Museum, Society of the Four Arts Museum and Gardens, and shopping tour of Worth Avenue. This is holiday month and the decorations are always elegant and very historic. Private lunch included.

  • January – Miami

     Behind-the-scenes at the historic Henry Fairchild Botanic Gardens and the little known botanical treasure, Montgomery Gardens. Private lunch included.

 • February – Delray Beach

     The beautiful Morikami Museum & Japanese Gardens and historic restoration of Old School Square, and shopping on historic Atlantic Avenue. Private lunch included.

  • March – Sarasota

     Ringling Museum & Estate, Art Museum and Circus Museum as well as Selby Botanical Gardens. Private lunch included.

 • April – Tampa

     Henry B. Plant Museum for the Annual Appraiser’s Fair and private tour of the historic hotel. Luncheon at Tampa Bay Yacht Club included.

Quilting and Stitchery at Edison Ford

● September 28, 10:00 a.m.

quilting     Both the Ford and Edison families collected handmade quilts, embroidered linens and other textiles. Continuing the tradition, members of the Southwest Florida Quilters Guild and members of the Southwest Embroidery Guild meet monthly at the Edison & Ford Winter Estates to demonstrate their work and answer questions. In the warmer months, the members meet inside the Edison Caretaker’s House and in the more temperate months, activity moves out of doors to the porches of the historic homes.

   This is FREE to Edison Ford Members and for non-members it is included in a Edison Ford Complete Tour admission. Come join in the fun!  Items are available for purchase.

     The Annual Clothesline Quilt Show and Sale is scheduled for October 26 when hundreds of contemporary and antique quilts are “aired” on the clotheslines between the palms in this historic gardens.  More information to follow.


Edison Ford Monthly Volunteer Meeting and Program – September

•  September 17, 9:30 a.m. – Edison Ford Shoppe at Bell Tower Shops

bell tower store chris Tom      Historian & Volunteer Coordinator, Bobby Feldman will discuss Charles Edison, son of Thomas and Mina Edison as well as Bobby’s interest in bike polo. Site Historian and Volunteer Coordinator, Holly Shaffer will discuss Thomas Edison and baseball. The American Red Cross will discuss tips on how to react in the event of an emergency and the scheduled first aid classes.
