President’s Update ~ August

Posted by Edison Ford Winter Estates On August 1st

Chris Pendleton, President & CEO

Big changes are happening as we focus our attention on the exhibits and activities in the Edison Ford Museum. The building itself is an interesting progression that began in the 1960’s with the conversion of Edison’s “old shop” at the entry into the Museum Store. It grew over the years to include an attached Orientation Gallery in the 1960’s, the middle section of the Museum was added in the 1970’s and the final addition of the “Hall of Invention” in the 1980’s.

This year, we will add a large 50×25 foot attached Museum Porch off the galleries to face the gardens and expand our program areas.  If you have visited lately, you will notice that we have already removed the restoration construction trailers and expanded the gardens around the beautiful old bougainvillea hedge.

Indoors, we will be completing an exhibit on Edison’s love of fishing and boating (complete with a replica wood skiff that won the wooden boat top award) will open in time for Edison’s birthday in February.

We will also be unveiling a Museum exhibit to explain Edison, Ford and Firestone’s work in support of botanical research for organic rubber. Part of this exhibit will be a miniature diorama of the lab including replica miniature glassware about 1/4 inches long.

As we promised in our planning, we focused on the riverside historic homes and gardens first, the laboratory next, and now we are working on the eastside Museum, gardens, Education Center, parking and visitor areas.  There is more work to come as we move Edison Ford ahead.
