Workshops 11 PM & 2 PM “Summer Planting of Tropical Heritage Trees”

Free to the public

Throughout the Edison & Ford Winter Estates public gardens and under the Banyan Tree, the Estates Garden Shoppe will be selling unique tropical heritage plants and trees and will be joined by several dozen south Florida vendors for a Summer “Edison Garden Market” on June 13, 2009 from 9 AM-5:30PM

Gardeners will be delighted at this one stop shopping for unique garden items including flowering trees, unusual tropical plants and fruits, bougainvillea, orchids, roses, bromeliads, palms, cactus, herbs, bonsai, bamboo, fruit, ginger and butterfly plants as well as garden art, honey, and gardening supplies. In addition, there will be a demonstration of painted rain barrels by southwest Florida artist, Marie Dyer and sale of garden art.

At 11 AM and 2 PM the Estates horticulturalist, Debbie Hughes, will be offering a workshop, “Summer Planting of Tropical Heritage Trees.” Summertime is the best time of year to plant trees in southwest Florida. Participants will learn the basics of planting heritage trees such as the Ylang Ylang, Banyan, Calabash, Tung Oil, Bo, Poinciana and Sausage trees in their own backyard. Trees will be available for purchase in the Estates Garden Shoppe.

The event and workshops are FREE to the public. Visitors can stroll the Edison Heritage Garden, take a photo with the recently installed Mina Edison statue and visit the Estates new water garden and butterfly area “A Bouquet for Mrs. Edison,” located in the Estates public garden.

The Estates was awarded the National Trust for Historic Preservation Award in 2008 and is an official project of “Save America’s Treasures” at the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a Florida Historic Landmark and a National Register Historic Site. Celebrate Fathers Day at the Edison & Ford Winter Estates

Fish Printing Workshop & free admission for fathers

Sunday, June 21st

Celebrate Father’s Day, June 21st at the Edison & Ford Winter Estates by creating a wonderful memento of the day by attending the Estates Fish Printing Workshop (also known at gyotaku, the Japanese art of fish rubbing). To honor Dads, the Estates will be offering free admission to any father accompanied with their child. Thomas Edison and his son enjoyed southwest Florida fishing and created many of their own happy memories. The Estates invites fathers and their children to create their own memories.

The Fish Printing Workshop begins at 10:30 AM and continues until 12:30 PM. All participants must bring a t-shirt. There is no charge for the workshop. The Estates will provide the “fish”, paint, and skill for participants to make a lasting keepsake of the day.

After the workshop visitors can enjoy hot dogs and refreshments in the Edison Caretaker’s House and tour the national award winning site.
